Chennai traffic police put in restrictions to streamline special Pongal buses Rajendra, January 14, 2020December 3, 2023 As thousands of Chennai residents embark on their journeys out of the city for the Pongal festival, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has implemented restrictions on the movement of special government buses from six designated bus stands in Chennai, effective until Tuesday. With the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) deploying over 30,000 special buses, the GCTP has issued a circular outlining traffic restrictions to streamline their operations and minimize traffic disruptions in the city. According to the circular, buses destined for various locations such as Mayiladathurai, Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Trichy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Sengottai, Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thindivanam, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Thirukovilur, Ariyalur, Thittakudi, Sendurai, Jeyankondam, Karaikudi, Pudukottai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tiruppur, Erode, Ooty, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Coimbatore, Ernakulam, Trivandrum, and Bangalore will exclusively depart from the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR Bus Stand in Koyambedu until January 14. Buses bound for Andhra Pradesh and those operated by the Andhra Pradesh government will operate solely from the Madhavaram bus stand. Routes between Chennai and Kancheepuram, Arcot, Arani, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Thirupathur, and Hosur will originate from the Poonamallee bus station. Buses connecting Chennai to Kumbakonam and Thanjavur via Thindivanam, Vikravandi, and Panruti will commence their journeys from the Tambaram Sanatorium bus depot. Other routes include buses to Thiruvannamalai departing from Tambaram railway station bus stop, and those traversing Porur, Chetpet, Vandavasi, Gingee, Panruti, Neyveli, Vadalur, Chidambaram, and Kattumannakoil via Thindivanam will operate exclusively from the Tambaram main bus stand. Buses heading to Puducherry, Cuddalore, and Chidambaram along the East Coast Road will depart solely from the K K Nagar bus station. To accommodate the influx of buses during the Pongal festivities, additional stops have been designated for buses heading to and from the Koyambedu bus terminus. The circular specifies stops for government buses en route to Koyambedu from various locations, with directives for Omni buses operating from Koyambedu Market E Road and those heading towards Vadapalani.
